Addiction Professionals trustee’s Raffaella Milani, Hugo Luck and Alex Harris recently participated in the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Drugs, Alcohol and Justice, chaired by Dr Tom Coffey.
The discussion, led by Dame Carol Black, highlighted the importance of stronger collaboration between prisons, police and drug treatment services to help break the cycle of addiction, reoffending and imprisonment. The role of addressing homelessness and the need for more qualified counsellors and psychosocial practitioners within addiction services were also emphasised.
Education was highlighted as another key factor in supporting recovery, helping people rebuild their lives, develop their potential and find purpose through employment and reintegration into society. People with lived experience of addiction bring invaluable knowledge, resilience and perspectives to education and professional practice.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to share work taking place at the University of East London, bringing together research, education and professional practice to improve addiction treatment and recovery outcomes.
The discussion reinforced an important message: recovery is about more than stopping substance use. It is about creating opportunities for people to rebuild their lives, reach their potential and thrive.
